Pakistan has secured approval to export dairy products to China, marking a significant milestone in the country's agricultural sector. Masaud Anwar, Secretary Livestock of the Government of Punjab, made the announcement during the 'Pakistan Agricultural Coalition’s Agri-Connections 2024' event held at Expo Center.
Anwar revealed that China Customs recently inspected the state-of-the-art FAM Farm in Sheikhupura and unofficially granted approval for Pakistan to commence dairy exports to China. This development signals a promising opportunity for Pakistan to tap into the lucrative Chinese market and bolster its dairy industry.
Addressing the audience, Iftikhar Sahoo, Secretary Agriculture of the Government of Punjab, emphasized the pivotal role of the private sector in driving agricultural innovation and growth. He outlined the government's ambitious vision for the agricultural sector, which includes plans to invest Rs100 billion over the next two years.
Sahoo further elaborated on initiatives aimed at modernizing agricultural practices, including an allocation of Rs80 billion for the modernization of watercourses across the province over the next three years. Additionally, the government is actively pursuing collaborations with academic institutions to facilitate research and provide opportunities for graduate students through paid internships.
Despite being an agricultural powerhouse, Pakistan faces challenges such as stagnant crop productivity, declining crop area, and loss of agricultural land. Sahoo underscored the need for concerted efforts to address these challenges and reduce the nation's reliance on food imports, which amount to $5 billion annually.
With strategic investments and collaborations, Pakistan aims to revitalize its agricultural sector and capitalize on emerging opportunities in global markets like China.
