Butter production in New Zealand is projected to increase to 525,000 tons in 2024, according to the latest USDA Dairy World Markets and Trade report. This slight rise in production is attributed to stable output levels supported by recent investments in processing facilities, particularly those focused on producing high-value products like grass-fed butter.
New Zealand Butter Production Forecasted to Rise in 2024
The outlook for New Zealand's dairy industry remains positive, although economic pressures such as high debt servicing costs and volatile feed and fertilizer prices pose potential challenges to overall butter output. Despite these headwinds, the country's butter production is expected to see modest growth.

On the export front, New Zealand's butter exports are forecasted to decline slightly to 495,000 tons in 2024. Early in the year, butter exports saw a small dip, yet demand for New Zealand butter remains strong in major markets, including China and the United States.

In addition to butter, exports of Anhydrous Milk Fat (AMF) have shown remarkable performance, with year-to-date exports up 24% compared to the same period last year. This surge reflects a robust global demand for AMF, further bolstering New Zealand's position in the global dairy market.

New Zealand's strategic focus on producing and exporting high-value dairy products, including both butter and AMF, continues to play a crucial role in sustaining its trade performance. As global demand for premium dairy products remains strong, New Zealand is well-positioned to maintain its competitive edge in the industry.
