The Swiss multinational's Spanish subsidiary is set to invest €15 million in its Nescafé plant in Gerona to develop more recyclable packaging.

Nestlé's Spanish subsidiary plans to invest 15 million euros (14.3 million Swiss francs) in its Nescafé factory, which produces instant coffee and Nescafé Dolce Gusto capsules, located in Gerona, near Barcelona. This investment aims to develop more recyclable packaging.
Nestlé has already commenced the construction of two new packaging plants, which will allow the use of recyclable materials, minimize single-use plastic, and utilize more energy-efficient machinery, as stated by a Nestlé Spain spokesperson to the financial news agency AWP.

The construction is expected to be completed by the end of the year. This investment will allow the production of Nescafé refill packets in Spain for the first time. Produced in Switzerland and shipped to Spain since 2022, these soluble coffee packets offer customers a more sustainable alternative to the traditional glass and plastic containers used for Nescafé. Additionally, Nestlé plans to build a new high-performance section or plant on its premises for small Nescafé packets made from a single recyclable material, with a production capacity of 1,200 packets per minute for retail and hospitality sectors, expected to reduce single-use plastic by 60 tons per year.
Operating since 1968, the Gerona plant employs over 900 people, exporting 84% of its soluble coffee and 75% of its Nescafé Dolce Gusto capsule production to 56 countries.
