Mountbellew Agricultural College Secures Planning Approval for Cutting-Edge ‘Smart-Dairy’ Facility
The development, created in partnership with ATU and Teagasc, will feature a milking parlour, animal handling facilities, a classroom, training room, viewing gallery, and canteen. The facility is equipped with the latest technology, aimed at delivering innovative, flexible training approaches and supporting sustainable farming practices.
As part of ATU, Mountbellew Agricultural College offers courses in agri-business, agri-engineering, and agri-environmental studies. In collaboration with Teagasc, the college also provides specialised certificates in agriculture, dairy management, drystock management, and mechanisation.
Mountbellew’s principal, Dr. Edna Curley, welcomed the approval, stating: “This new facility represents a significant advancement for our learners, offering immersive, state-of-the-art training that is focused on sustainable farm production and performance. It will vastly improve the quality of our practical and applied programmes.”
ATU President, Dr. Orla Flynn, emphasized the broader impact of the development: “This project is a major step forward for our agricultural programmes. Our strong partnership with Mountbellew allows us to offer agri-related training that benefits both the region and beyond.”
Prof. Frank O’Mara, director of Teagasc, praised the project as an exciting opportunity for the next generation of farmers: “This new facility will enhance the learning experience for students enrolled in Teagasc programmes. It’s vital that future farmers have access to cutting-edge technology and resources to develop their skills.”
The design of the ‘Smart-Dairy’ facility is being led by the Grasstec Group, ensuring the project meets the highest standards of innovation and sustainability.
