Milky Mist opens expanded yogurt plant in India

Milky Mist Dairy Food has brought a new manufacturing unit into operation at its Perundurai facility in Tamil Nadu, India. The plant produces Skyr and Greek yogurt and is designed around ultrafiltration technology, which the company says it is using to serve demand for high-protein products.

The investment in the dedicated facility was approximately ₹40 crore, equivalent to €3.6 million. Milky Mist financed the project through a combination of internal accruals and proceeds from its initial public offering.

The new unit can process as much as 150 tonnes a day. Before the expansion, the company’s capacity for the category was 20 tonnes per day, a level it had maintained since introducing ultrafiltration-based production in 2022.

Milky Mist says it was the first company in India to introduce ultrafiltration technology for making Skyr and Greek yogurt. The company introduced the technology in 2022 as consumers showed a growing preference for high-protein nutrition, according to a report by skanx.trade.

Annual demand for Skyr and Greek yogurt has increased by more than 50% since 2022, the company says. The expansion therefore adds 130 tonnes a day to the capacity cited for the category, taking the reported total from 20 tonnes per day to up to 150 tonnes per day.

The Perundurai project is focused on two yogurt types: Skyr, a high-protein cultured dairy product, and Greek yogurt. The company has identified high-protein yogurt demand as the basis for expanding production at the Tamil Nadu site.
