Michigan Cheese Companies Secure DBIA Grants for Growth

Two renowned Michigan-based cheese companies, Leelanau Cheese Co. and Reny Picot — Old Europe Cheese Inc., have successfully secured financial grants to foster business diversification and growth. This initiative is part of the Dairy Business Innovation Alliance (DBIA) program, which aims to stimulate the dairy sector's resiliency and innovation.

Leelanau Cheese Co.

Established in 1995, Leelanau Cheese Co. has garnered an impressive reputation for its cave-aged, European-style cheeses. With the acquired $100,000 DBIA grant, the Suttons Bay, Michigan company plans to upgrade its equipment, thereby enhancing its production capabilities and expanding market influence.

Reny Picot — Old Europe Cheese Inc.

Operating since 1987, Reny Picot — Old Europe Cheese Inc. is located in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Known for its specialty cheeses crafted from locally sourced ingredients, the company aims to use its $98,000 grant to reintroduce sliced brie, expand its production, and create new job opportunities.

Funded by the USDA, the DBIA is a strategic effort to bring about sustainability and resilience in the dairy industry. The alliance is a collaboration between the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association and the Center for Dairy Research. Since its introduction with the 2018 Farm Bill, the DBIA has distributed over 250 grants amounting to more than $20 million across several Midwest states.

Applications for the next DBIA grant cycle will be open in February 2025, offering ongoing support to the dairy sector’s development.
