Meat and Dairy Companies Accused of Greenwashing Environmental Claims

According to a new study published in PLOS Climate, 33 of the largest meat and dairy companies have been accused of making misleading environmental claims. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Miami, analyzed sustainability reports from companies such as JBS, Tyson Foods, and Arla Foods, finding that 98% of their claims lacked credibility.

The research highlighted that JBS, the world's largest meat company, had no clear plan to achieve its net-zero goal by 2040, yet raised $1 billion in sustainability-linked bonds. Similarly, Arla Foods, a major dairy company, claimed climate action by installing solar panels on a single site, covering only 12% of its electricity needs, and initiating a small-scale regenerative agriculture pilot on 24 farms.

Arla Foods disputed the study’s findings, with Bjarke Munk Kamstrup, head of global media relations, asserting that their climate goals have been validated by external auditors and the Science Based Targets initiative. Despite such claims, the study observed that more than a third of all promises were vague future commitments without actionable steps.

The study also noted the legal challenges faced by these companies, including a lawsuit filed by the New York attorney general against JBS for misleading advertising. Furthermore, California has introduced new emissions reporting requirements for large businesses in the state.

In the broader context, the meat and dairy industry is responsible for 16.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting the critical need for genuine climate action. The researchers cautioned that the prevalent greenwashing practices could delay meaningful environmental progress.
