Mars and FrieslandCampina have started a new partnership focused on an accelerated reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the dairy production supplied to Mars.
The collaboration between FrieslandCampina and Mars directly contributes to extra rewards for member dairy farms for their efforts, targeting lower greenhouse gas emissions with this partnership by -33 percent in 2025 and up to -50 percent by 2030 compared to 2015 levels.
FrieslandCampina, a trusted supplier to Mars for more than 30 years, plays a vital role in providing essential dairy ingredients like milk fat and cream for renowned brands such as M&M’s®, SNICKERS® and TWIX®. This new partnership will dedicate a group of FrieslandCampina member farms that are part of the FrieslandCampina development group, specifically to Mars’ dairy supply. Mars compensates these farmers to implement, test and accelerate innovative greenhouse gas emission reduction measures, such as feed additives to reduce methane emissions.
Sanne Griffioen, Director Farm Sustainability at FrieslandCampina: “At FrieslandCampina we want to provide nourishment in balance with people and planet. We have set the goal to produce net climate-neutral dairy by no later than 2050. Partnerships like these are essential in supporting farmers, unlocking innovations, and accelerating sustainability efforts on the farm. It is a great example of how we as chain partners can drive sustainability together.”
Amanda Davies, Chief R&D, Procurement and Sustainability Officer at Mars Snacking: “Dairy is the second largest contributor to the carbon footprint of our Mars Snacking business, and working to reduce that is a non-negotiable for us and critical to meeting our Mars Net Zero ambition. We can only do this by collaborating with our key partners like FrieslandCampina and their farmers. Together – through innovative climate-smart practices, leveraging unique data expertise, and a shared commitment to deliver progress – we can help create a more sustainable future for dairy.”
FrieslandCampina Development group
FrieslandCampina excels in using data to drive decisions and focus on results, ensuring success through measurement, action, and monitoring. The more than 14,000 member dairy farmers, who are also the owners of FrieslandCampina through the cooperative, are rewarded for their results on animal health and welfare, climate, biodiversity and outdoor grazing via the Foqus planet Sustainable development programme.
Member dairy farmers of FrieslandCampina have made significant progress in reducing their carbon footprint over the years. However, to reduce even further, additional financial support is needed to unlock and implement innovative solutions. In the first half-year of 2024, over 600 FrieslandCampina member dairy farms have signed up for the development group. This group of member dairy farmers is committed to achieving additional greenhouse gas reduction by applying and refining innovative measures on their farms. The aim is that these measures will eventually be applied more widely across the cooperative. FrieslandCampina anticipates that more B2B-partners will join the Development group.
