Is Sinaloa Ready to Face Severe Drought?
Sinaloa is currently experiencing an unprecedented water crisis due to prolonged droughts affecting the state over recent years. The region's 11 reservoirs are operating at less than 10% of their capacity, marking the lowest levels in the past three decades. This poses an imminent threat to agriculture, livestock, and drinking water supplies.

The water scarcity is jeopardizing agricultural production, one of Sinaloa's primary economic activities, threatening the 2024-2025 autumn-winter planting cycle. Livestock farmers are also facing challenges as traditional water sources for their animals are critically low, and several communities are already experiencing disrupted potable water supplies. Consequently, municipal governments are forced to plan rationing and distribution strategies using water trucks.

In response to this situation, the state's government needs to urgently re-activate emergency drought strategies, prioritizing measures like the modernization of agricultural irrigation, the rehabilitation of water infrastructure, the promotion of rainwater harvesting, and the implementation of awareness campaigns about responsible resource use. Failure to act immediately could have catastrophic consequences for the state's economy and residents' welfare.
