Irish Farmers Encouraged to Optimize Grass Utilization for Dairy Farms
At the recent Irish Grassland Association (IGA) conference, Teagasc advisor John McCabe emphasized the challenges Irish farmers face in growing more grass. He presented methods to enhance grass growth efficiently and economically.
McCabe urged the application of chemical nitrogen in early spring when temperatures reach 5.5℃. He highlighted that sub-optimal soil fertility is limiting grass growth by 1-2 tonnes of dry matter (DM)/ha, recommending soil sampling as a corrective measure.
The advisor encouraged farmers to reassess paddock sizes, which have lagged behind herd expansion. With larger herd sizes, correct paddock dimensions ensure complete nutrition for all cows, especially first-lactation cows.
As stocking rates increase, the need for quality silage becomes critical. McCabe advises targeting a silage dry matter digestibility (DMD) of over 74% and maintaining a 400kg silage reserve to cushion against weather unpredictability.
