Inner Mongolia - A Global Leader in Dairy Production Thanks to Innovation and Alfalfa

Hohhot, a city located in Inner Mongolia, has become the center of China’s advanced dairy industry. It houses the largest production facilities, supplying dairy products to the world.
One of the reasons for the success of local producers is the inclusion of alfalfa in cows' diets. This beneficial plant is not only easily digestible but also improves the quality of the milk, making it tastier and more nutritious. According to Zhao Yaju, the CEO of a local agricultural company, alfalfa hay consists of 20% crude protein, which increases both milk yield and protein content by 3-4%.
Farms and factories in Hohhot are equipped with modern technologies, including automated feeding and milking systems. Using robots, 80 cows can be milked in just eight minutes, and the milk is immediately cooled to 4°C before being sent to the factory for further processing.
Cutting-edge technology is also used on the production lines: one bottling plant can produce up to 40,000 milk packages per hour, allowing the facility to supply around 10 million people per day.
As Gui Baolun, the deputy director of one agricultural enterprise, noted, the entire milk production chain—from feeding the cows to packaging—is controlled using digital monitoring and quality management systems, ensuring high standards at every stage of production.
It is no surprise that Hohhot has become the headquarters for leading global dairy companies and has earned the title of the "World's Scientific and Technological Dairy Capital."
