Jakarta—The Indonesian government is prioritizing locally sourced milk in its Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program, aiming to bolster domestic dairy production and reduce reliance on imports. According to Dadan Hindayana, head of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), this strategy will focus on regions with established dairy farms, ensuring milk is a key component of the program.

“By integrating local milk into the MBG program, we’re not only addressing nutrition but also supporting local farmers and reducing the need for imports,” Hindayana stated following a meeting with Commission IX of the House of Representatives (DPR) on Monday.

Under the MBG initiative, each student’s meal budget includes milk, set at Rp10,000 (approximately $0.62) per meal. In dairy regions, students will receive milk at least three times a week. For areas without access to dairy farms, the government will substitute milk with alternative protein sources, such as fish and eggs, to maintain balanced nutrition.

Government’s Nutrition Push

Launched this week, the MBG program reflects the government’s broader commitment to improving public health through better nutrition. With a budget of Rp71 trillion (nearly $4.4 billion), the program is a cornerstone of President Joko Widodo’s initiative to combat malnutrition and promote food security.

The newly established National Nutrition Agency (BGN), formed in August 2024, will oversee the program’s implementation and ensure the effective distribution of nutritious meals across the country.

Boosting the Local Dairy Industry

The emphasis on locally produced milk aligns with Indonesia’s long-term goal of self-sufficiency in dairy. Despite rising demand, the country currently imports a significant portion of its milk. By integrating milk into school meal programs, the government hopes to stimulate domestic dairy production and provide a stable market for local farmers.

As Indonesia continues to prioritize nutrition and sustainability, the MBG program serves as a vital link between public health and agricultural development, ensuring both sectors thrive in tandem.
