The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru has achieved a significant technological breakthrough by developing a method to recycle post-consumer polyethylene film into durable engineering plastics. These plastic milk pouches, commonly made from low-density polyethylene (LDPE) or linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), contribute substantially to urban waste in India.

The recycling of these pouches has traditionally been challenging due to contamination from organic milk proteins, the thin film geometry, and thermal degradation in conventional recycling processes. These issues typically led to downcycled, low-value products. To address these challenges, IISc researchers devised chemical modification and compounding processes that restructure the recovered polyethylene. By incorporating specific compatibilizers, reinforcing agents, and additives, they enhanced the mechanical strength, thermal stability, and impact resistance of the recycled polymers.

The upcycled material produced has properties comparable to commercial virgin engineering plastics. This material can be used in various industrial applications, including automotive interiors, electrical enclosures, consumer appliances, and outdoor structural materials. It offers manufacturers a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to traditional petroleum-based resins.

This innovative process not only provides a scalable solution for managing single-use flexible packaging waste but also supports the advancement of circular economy practices in developing markets. By transforming discarded milk pouches into valuable engineering materials, the IISc process encourages the collection of waste, reduces landfill accumulation, and contributes to broader environmental efforts to minimize plastic pollution.
