Theo Spierings, the former chief executive of Fonterra, passed away unexpectedly in the Netherlands over the weekend following a brief illness. The announcement was made by The Purpose Factory, a Dutch-based foundation and consultancy focused on sustainable development and business transformation, where Spierings was a co-founder and chairman.

Spierings brought more than 30 years of experience to the global dairy industry, having held leadership roles at both Fonterra and Dutch dairy cooperative Royal Friesland Foods, which he guided through its 2008 merger with Campina. Spierings took the helm at Fonterra in 2011, succeeding Andrew Ferrier and serving nearly seven years as CEO. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in shaping Fonterra’s strategy on the global stage, although he also faced scrutiny over his $8.32 million compensation package in 2017, making him one of the highest-paid executives in New Zealand at the time.

The Purpose Factory acknowledged the deep influence Spierings had on colleagues and the wider business community, stating that his legacy in the dairy industry and his commitment to sustainable development would be remembered with great respect.

“At this difficult time, Theo’s family has requested privacy. They appreciate the outpouring of love and support from around the world during this sad time. A private memorial service will be held in the Netherlands,” the statement concluded.
