Fonterra has signed a virtual power purchase agreement (PPA) with NZ Clean Energy for a 129MW solar-plus-storage project near its Darfield manufacturing site in New Zealand. The site was selected due to its grid connectivity and proximity to industrial demand. The project will feature 'agrivoltaics', enabling sheep grazing to continue on the land during operations.

Construction of the Darfield project is expected to generate over 100 jobs in the Canterbury region. The virtual PPA provides Fonterra with a financial hedge against electricity market volatility, offering long-term price stability while fostering new renewable energy development. Anna Palairet, Fonterra's chief operating officer, highlighted the alignment of solar generation with the dairy industry's seasonal needs, stating that it helps secure long-term price certainty.

Harry Simpson, CEO of NZ Clean Energy, commented on the commercial viability of long-term PPA structures for financing new renewable energy projects in New Zealand. He noted that such agreements are crucial for unlocking investment in renewable energy and providing industrial customers with a cost-effective renewable energy solution.

NZ Clean Energy views the Darfield agreement as a replicable model for its broader project pipeline across New Zealand. The company's COO, George Hughes, mentioned that Darfield serves as a blueprint for future developments, highlighting its grid connectivity and battery storage capabilities. The company's pipeline includes projects in regions such as Masterton, Wairarapa, Dannevirke, and Manawatū-Whanganui, with initial construction planned for 2026 and 2027.

The Darfield project includes provisions for future battery storage, although specific details on size and timeline were not provided. A LinkedIn post from the developer last year suggested a battery energy storage system (BESS) size of 200-400MWh.

This agreement comes amid a broader acceleration in solar development across New Zealand. Contact Energy recently completed module installation at the 150MW Kōwhai Park solar PV plant at Christchurch Airport, expected to commence operations in late 2026. Lodestone Energy has also initiated construction on a 31.5MW solar farm in Central Hawke’s Bay, marking the region's first utility-scale solar development.

For Fonterra, the Darfield PPA is part of a larger decarbonisation effort, aiming for a 50.4% reduction in emissions from manufacturing by 2030 and net zero by 2050. The cooperative has already transitioned its North Island facilities away from coal and is working on similar projects for its South Island sites.
