Fiji's Dairy Future: Securing Land for Sustainability

The i-Taukei Lands Trust Board (TLTB) is currently managing 73 active dairy leases across Fiji, providing crucial support to farmers engaged in milk production and significantly contributing to the sustainability of rural livelihoods. This crucial role was emphasized by the Minister for i-Taukei Affairs, Ifereimi Vasu, during a parliamentary session.
Minister Vasu noted that in 2023, 16 dairy leases were formally activated. This involved the renewal of nine leases for existing farmers whose leases were expiring or had expired, successfully ensuring continuity. Additionally, seven new lease activations were undertaken, either through new applications or by reactivating previously dormant leases.
The new leases cover a combined area exceeding 290 hectares, with annual rent rates established through agreements between the TLTB and representatives of the landowning units. Minister Vasu underscored the Ministry of i-Taukei Affairs' commitment to providing secure land tenure for dairy farmers. Lease renewals not only present long-term security policies but also guarantee ongoing land use and productivity, along with stable rental incomes for landowners.
