Delhi Approves Biogas Plant to Tackle Dairy Waste Management
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has granted administrative approval for the establishment of a 300 tonnes-per-day biogas plant at Ghazipur dairy farm. This decision, announced on April 9, 2026, aims to address the issue of cattle waste management in the area. The proposal is expected to be presented to the House on April 24 for further consideration.
According to officials, the biogas plant will be constructed on approximately five acres of land. The tender for the project is set to be issued shortly. This initiative is part of a larger strategy to manage waste from dairy colonies throughout Delhi, which includes similar projects at Bhalswa, Masoodpur, and Madanpur Khadar, among others.
Additional projects include a 100 TPD plant at Sarita Vihar and a 200 TPD facility at Mangolpuri. The plan also involves the collaboration of the MCD and the Delhi government with the National Dairy Development Board to handle waste effectively. In an effort to prevent the dumping of cow dung into the Yamuna River, a subsidy of 65 paise per kilogram is offered to farmers near the Nangli Dairy biogas plant.
The comprehensive action plan also proposes the establishment of ten biogas plants and nine wastewater treatment facilities, along with the improvement of drainage systems in dairy colonies to prevent waste from entering the Yamuna through city drains.
