Cathedral City, a cheese brand owned by Saputo, has announced the expansion of its plant-based offering with the launch of a new Smokey Block SKU, priced at £3.60 for 280g. This move comes nearly two years after the successful introduction of the ‘Our Plant Based’ range, which has seen a remarkable 65% growth over the past year, reaching a retail sales value (RSV) of £9.1 million.

Smokey, the leading flavor in the plant-based cheese market, follows the success of Cathedral City’s ‘Our Naturally Smoked Cheddar’, a dairy version launched in 2023. The new Smokey Block will be exclusively available at Tesco this week and will stand out as the only plant-based cheese alternative in UK supermarkets to use natural smoking methods, promising a "uniquely creamy but intensely smokey flavour".

Christopher Owens, Head of Marketing for Plant-Based at Saputo Dairy UK, said: “With the success of Cathedral City Plant-Based, we are exploring new flavor territories, offering consumers more dairy-free options. This launch solidifies the mass appeal of our brand by providing on-trend flavors in both dairy and plant-based formats.”

Cathedral City’s new Smokey Block is designed to melt easily, making it ideal for burgers and other hot dishes. The launch will be supported by in-store and online campaigns and will join the existing ‘Our Plant Based’ range, which includes Block, Grated, Sandwich Slice, and Spreadable formats.

The plant-based cheese market in the UK is valued at £42.2 million and is purchased by 8% of UK households, highlighting the growing demand for dairy alternatives.
