Calved Heifer Sells for £2960 at Kilrea Mart Amid Strong Demand for Dairy and Beef Breeds
Calves of all types attracted strong buyer interest, with dropped calves seeing competitive bidding. A Ballymoney farmer secured a top price of £715 for a Charolais calf, while Belgian Blue calves also attracted attention, selling for up to £660. Limousin, Aberdeen Angus, and Simmental breeds were similarly in demand, with prices ranging from £225 to £650 across various lots.
The sale of heifer calves also saw significant interest, with a Belgian Blue heifer from an Ahoghill farmer reaching £690. Other notable sales included a Charolais heifer fetching £620 and several Limousin and Aberdeen Angus calves selling for up to £525.
Friesian calves, in particular, witnessed strong trade, with top-quality young calves selling for as much as £355. There remains strong demand for thick Friesian types, with more required to meet buyer needs.
Weanlings and suckler calves were in excellent demand, with Continental beef breeds leading the way. Weanlings reached a top price of £820 and 289 pence per kilogram, underscoring the robust market for quality beef-bred types.
The fat lamb and ewe market also held steady during the sale on Monday, 9th September, with quality lambs continuing to command good prices across the board.
