California confirmed bird flu in 24 additional dairy herds last week, bringing the total number of infected herds in the state to 34, making it the second-highest in the country, according to USDA data released on Monday.
The outbreaks have occurred since August 30, with Colorado leading the nation at 64 infected herds out of a total of 232 outbreaks across 14 states. Idaho ranks third with 32 herds affected, followed by Michigan with 29.
Bird flu was first detected in dairy cattle in late March. The H5N1 avian flu virus causes symptoms such as fever, reduced appetite, and a significant drop in milk production, though most cows recover after a couple of weeks.
California, the largest milk-producing state in the U.S., saw its 1.7 million dairy cows produce 3.37 billion pounds of milk in August, accounting for nearly 19% of national production.
