California Allocates $6.3 Million for Dairy Methane Reduction Initiatives

The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) has announced a significant investment of $6.3 million to fund seven projects focused on reducing methane emissions from dairy and livestock operations within the state. This funding is part of California's ongoing efforts to address climate change by targeting the agriculture sector, particularly the dairy industry, known for its substantial methane emissions.

Five of these projects will receive support through the Alternative Manure Management Program, which has been allocated nearly $3.7 million in grants. This program encourages the adoption of innovative manure management techniques, such as composting systems and solid separation technologies, that help minimize methane production by avoiding anaerobic decomposition.

In addition to the manure management initiatives, two projects will benefit from the Dairy Digester Research and Development Program, receiving about $2.6 million in state grants. These projects are backed by nearly $10 million in matching funds from private entities, illustrating strong industry support for anaerobic digester technology. These digesters capture methane from manure storage and processing, converting it to renewable natural gas.

CDFA Secretary Karen Ross highlighted the role of California's dairy and livestock farmers as global leaders in innovation, emphasizing that the funding would accelerate methane reduction efforts and improve farm sustainability. The projects are expected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by more than 24,000 metric tons each year, equating to removing thousands of cars from roads.

Beyond reducing emissions, the funded projects will enhance nutrient management practices, improve air quality in dairy-producing regions, and increase compost production, supporting soil health across the state's agricultural landscape. This comprehensive approach underscores California's commitment to sustainable agriculture by addressing environmental, economic, and social dimensions concurrently.

Source and Context

The funding initiative by the CDFA reaffirms California's position as a leader in agricultural climate policy, particularly in the dairy sector, which significantly contributes to the state's greenhouse gas inventory. The focus on methane reduction aligns with broader climate goals and supports the economic competitiveness of dairy producers.
