Arla Foods Proposes Solar Farm to Power Lockerbie Dairy Facility

Arla Foods, the largest dairy cooperative in the UK, has unveiled plans to establish a solar farm adjacent to its dairy plant in Lockerbie, located in the south of Scotland. The initiative aims to power the creamery exclusively by utilizing the electricity generated from the solar panels, which will be directly connected to the factory through a dedicated wire.

The proposed solar farm will cover an area of approximately 10 hectares, comprising nearly 9,000 solar panels. These installations will be encompassed by a security fence and monitored by CCTV cameras, which will activate in the event of any unauthorized access.

Currently, the Lockerbie creamery employs around 242 individuals and has a production capacity of 600 million litres of milk and 42,000 tonnes of cheddar cheese annually. The facility, originally inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth 50 years ago, plays a significant role in the region's agricultural output.

Arla Foods has highlighted that this renewable energy project will make a substantial contribution to reducing carbon emissions, aligning with broader environmental targets. Additionally, the company addressed growing concerns regarding energy supply security, indicating that the solar farm could alleviate potential issues in this area.
