In a recent "Fireside chat" session at the businessline Agriculture and Commodity Summit 2024, Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of Amul, expressed the cooperative's strong opposition to permitting imports of dairy products at concessional duty under free trade agreements (FTAs). The move is aimed at safeguarding the livelihoods of around 10 crore farmers who rely on the Indian milk sector.

During the session, businessline Editor Raghuvir Srinivasan raised a crucial question about Australia's request for duty concessions on its dairy products for imports into India. In response, Mehta emphasized Amul's firm stance, stating, "We will demand that Chapter 4 (which permits duty concession for imports) be kept out."
In addition to addressing the concerns over concessional duty, Mehta also revealed Amul's significant commitment to the food sector. He announced that the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), the umbrella organization of Amul, plans to invest a substantial ₹11,500 crore in the food sector, underlining their dedication to the industry's growth and development.
