An integrated dairy complex with the world's largest milk powder production plant will be built in Algeria. This large-scale project, aimed at reducing the country's dependence on imports and enhancing food security, is the result of an agreement between the Qatari company Baladna, the Algerian government, and the German engineering group GEA Group.

The contract signing ceremony took place on July 28 in Algeria. The project, to be implemented in the province of Adrar, approximately 90 kilometers from the administrative center, is valued at between 140 and 170 million euros. For GEA, one of Europe's leading suppliers of food industry technologies, this is one of the largest deals in the company's history. Order intake is expected to be recorded in the second half of 2025.

Construction of the facility will begin in early 2026, with milk powder production starting at the end of 2027. Once fully operational, the plant will be able to produce up to 100,000 tons of milk powder annually, covering about half of Algeria's domestic demand.

Algeria is currently the third-largest importer of milk powder in the world. The new complex, operated by the joint venture Baladna Algeria S.P.A., aims to increase national self-sufficiency and create around 5,000 local jobs.

GEA will supply and install comprehensive equipment covering the entire production chain: from dairy farm systems, milking parlors, milk fat processing and milk powder equipment, spray drying technologies, membrane filtration, to packaging and automation systems.
