However, due to shrinking profit margins, local dairy farmers are exploring innovative avenues to bolster their financial standing without compromising land use. One such solution has emerged in the form of community solar subscriptions, which offer a sustainable and lucrative alternative.

Recently, two off-site community solar installations were completed, developed by Norwich Solar and financially backed by Solaris Energy and Greenday Finance. These projects, each with a capacity of 500 kWAC (864 kWDC), are strategically positioned on less fertile lands in Newbury and Jamaica. Collectively, they are set to deliver over 2,100 kWh of renewable energy every year to six local dairy farms.

Located on a repurposed gravel pit and a previously logged hillside, these solar arrays not only aim to cut fixed energy costs but also to enhance profitability for the farms, contributing to the economic sustainability of the region.

The community has shown significant interest and support for these initiatives. The Jamaica site, in particular, has attracted attention fr om nearby residents, reflecting the community's involvement and approval of sustainable development projects. Nick Francis of Solaris Energy highlighted the projects as prime examples of community-scale solar success, wh ere local engagement enhances both the economy and environmental stewardship.

The collaboration between Norwich Solar, Solaris Energy, and Greenday Finance exemplifies a successful partnership model in community solar projects. This model not only addresses the environmental impacts of traditional farming practices but also ensures long-term economic benefits for the stakeholders involved.

Through such initiatives, Vermont's dairy farms are setting a precedent for integrating renewable energy solutions into agricultural operations.
