The U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC) and the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) have welcomed the recent resolution of the labor strike affecting ports on the East and Gulf Coasts. With port operations resuming, the two organizations are urging both parties to conclude contract negotiations swiftly to establish long-term reliability for U.S. dairy exports.
In a statement, Krysta Harden, President and CEO of USDEC, expressed gratitude for the Biden Administration’s role in facilitating a return to work. “Ensuring U.S. dairy products reach international markets is essential. We commend the Administration for its efforts to restore port operations, and we encourage all parties involved to finalize a contract that secures the supply chain and bolsters the dependability of American exports,” Harden said.
The recent three-day work stoppage impacted an estimated $1.7 billion in dairy exports that flow through these ports annually, causing significant delays and logistical challenges. Dairy exporters have reported cancellations, increased rerouting expenses, and additional time required to reposition products. The disruption has heightened the need for a swift resolution to contract talks, which NMPF President and CEO Gregg Doud emphasized is critical for maintaining the confidence of international customers.
“Our global buyers need the certainty that their orders will arrive on schedule,” Doud stated. “U.S. dairy producers simply cannot bear further delays or added costs.”
In response to the ongoing challenges, USDEC and NMPF have advised dairy exporters to contact Tony Rice at NMPF (trice@nmpf.org) for assistance with logistical issues arising from the recent strike.
The U.S. Dairy Export Council, a non-profit organization representing the trade interests of U.S. dairy producers and processors, remains dedicated to promoting global competitiveness for the U.S. dairy industry. By supporting market development initiatives and advocating for favorable trade policies, USDEC helps expand the international presence of American dairy products, strengthening the industry’s role in the global market.
