This data, sourced from the US Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, signifies the highest level of cheese production in the country over the past 32 years, as confirmed by the Cheese Reporter.

The positive trend in cheese production was sustained for seven consecutive months throughout 2023. However, amid this domestic success, the US faced challenges on the international front. According to the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service, the country experienced a 3% decline in cheese exports and a broader 16% decrease in overall dairy product exports during the same period.

Interestingly, despite the dip in exports, the US witnessed a 2% increase in cheese imports, reaching a total value surpassing $4 billion. Key contributors to this surge were Ireland and New Zealand, emerging as primary exporters. Additionally, Mexico demonstrated a notable 10% increase in cheese exports, totaling $291.1 million, while the UK experienced a remarkable 44% rise, reaching $172.2 million. Canada also displayed a significant boost of 25%, with exports amounting to $383 million. The dynamics of the global cheese trade underscore the complex interplay of production and consumption trends in the United States and its key trading partners.
