China has launched an anti-subsidy investigation into dairy imports from the European Union, a move that came just one day after the EU revised its tariff plan on electric vehicles (EVs) manufactured in China. The investigation, announced on Wednesday, targets key dairy products such as cheese, milk, and cream intended for human consumption.

This development follows the European Union's decision to adjust its proposed punitive duties on Chinese electric vehicle imports, reducing the tariff rate slightly from 37.6% to 36.3%. Despite the minor concession, Beijing had strongly urged Brussels to abandon the tariffs altogether.

The European Union Chamber of Commerce in China expressed its concern over the escalating trade tensions. In a statement, the Chamber highlighted the growing trend of reciprocal use of trade defense mechanisms by governments. “Regrettably, the use of trade defense instruments by one government is increasingly being responded to seemingly in kind by the recipient government,” the Chamber noted.

Given the European Commission’s recent disclosure of its final findings on the anti-subsidy probe into Chinese battery electric vehicles (BEVs), the Chamber stated that China’s decision to initiate an investigation into EU dairy imports was not unexpected. The Chamber emphasized that it would closely monitor the investigation and called for the process to be conducted fairly and transparently.

“We expect our affected member companies to cooperate to the fullest with the investigation,” the Chamber added, underscoring the importance of maintaining open channels of communication and adherence to due process in the face of rising trade tensions.
