Puck, a purpose-driven global brand under the umbrella of Arla Foods, a multinational dairy company, unveiled today its latest endeavor, the "Selfless Shelves" initiative.
This program is designed to uplift five enterprising women fr om distinct villages in Lebanon by offering them shelf space within Carrefour stores to showcase and sell their handcrafted, locally sourced products known as "mouneh." Packaged in repurposed Puck glass jars, each containing a unique narrative, these products aim not only to share the women's heartwarming stories but also to contribute to their families' financial well-being.
The range of artisanal goods includes culinary delights like makdous eggplant, zaatar, dried orange bitter peels, sumac, and pumpkin jam, now accessible on the shelves of select Carrefour branches in Lebanon, starting January 22, 2024.
Puck's initiation of the "Selfless Shelves" project is a response to the economic challenges prevailing in Lebanon, with a stark 63% of women facing unemployment, as outlined in a report by UN Women. This issue is particularly pronounced in remote regions wh ere job opportunities have dwindled.
In response, women in Lebanon's villages turned to selling "mouneh" within their communities to secure basic income. Recognizing the initiative these women displayed in supporting their families, Puck decided to foster and promote their locally generated income by providing jars and shelf space for their products.
Yahia Adel Z AlSharif, Head of Category at Arla Foods, expressed his enthusiasm for the campaign, stating, "Puck's proactive efforts towards fostering sustainable consumer behavior at the community level aim to instigate positive changes in both socioeconomic and environmental aspects. It is inspiring to witness Puck taking steps through ongoing campaigns to promote mindful habits, such as reusing glass jars, while simultaneously supporting and empowering local artisanal businesses led by women in Lebanon."
This marks just the beginning of Puck's commitment to female empowerment in society. The "Selfless Shelves" initiative serves as a pilot for future programs that the brand plans to unveil, furthering its dedication to taking conscious steps toward enhancing women's well-being. Puck aims to achieve this by providing healthier product options, a diverse range of offerings, and inspirational recipes that empower women economically and contribute to their overall empowerment.
