Proposed Dairy Farm in West Kauai Aims to Cut Milk Prices

Hawaii's heavy reliance on milk imports may ease as Aloun Farms proposes a new dairy in West Kauai.

With Hawaii down to just one commercial dairy farm and heavily relying on imports, a West Kauai area emerges as a potential new development site for dairy farming.
Aloun Farms proposes transforming a 500-acre agricultural area into a new dairy farm, aiming to ease the state's reliance on imports which currently make up 90% of its milk supply.
This reliance leaves Hawaii vulnerable to price fluctuations, with milk prices in Kauai and Honolulu ranging from $5.29 to $8.99 and $4.99 to $7.29, respectively.
The proposal follows a failed attempt six years ago to establish a dairy on Kauai's south shore due to environmental and tourism concerns.
However, the new location is distanced from tourist areas, housing roughly 6,000 residents and fewer than 100 hotel rooms.
The collapse of the Kekaha Sugar Company left thousands of acres available for development, giving hope to Aloun Farms President Alec Sou, who anticipates reducing milk prices to $3-$4 per carton, assuming approval of the proposed dairy farm site.
