More than 2 million shapes of PDO Gorgonzola cheese exported worldwide

PDO Gorgonzola cheese is one of the most well-known Italian cheeses abroad, with distribution in 91 countries around the globe and a percentage of around 40% of the total production exported, which amounts to 5,179,000 shapes.

As reported by the Consortium for the Protection of PDO Gorgonzola Cheese in 2023, exports increased by 1.1% for a total of 24,982 tonnes, equivalent to 2,081,834 total shapes exported, with a value increase of about 202 million euros, up 15.5% compared to the previous year (source: Clal).
With 1,785,167 shapes, the European Union absorbs much of the export. The share directed to the top two importing countries overall, France (485,803 shapes) and Germany (442,800), remains essentially stable, followed by Spain (155,164), which records an 8% growth. Excellent performances from Macedonia (+89%), Bosnia and Herzegovina (+51%), Norway (+40%), Ukraine (+28%), and Poland (+15%).
The export of PDO Gorgonzola cheese to the rest of the world grows by 2.9%, reaching 296,583 shapes. Last year, 85,465 shapes went to Switzerland. The United Kingdom, which is growing again (+8%) for the first time after Brexit, received 44,347 shapes. Outside the physical borders of the European continent, Japan confirms itself as the top importer outside the EU for the third consecutive year (44,482 shapes), with a 15% growth, followed by the USA (32,738, +1.56%). Excellent performances from Indonesia (+147%), Costa Rica (+48%), Hong Kong (+40%).
