Mexico Aims for 2.2% Growth in Milk Production by Year-End 2024
Currently, Mexico produces between 74% and 75% of the milk it consumes, with imports covering the shortfall. Despite the need for imports, Hernández Álvarez views them as supplementary to domestic production, rather than a challenge to the national supply.
Over the past five years, milk production has grown steadily, averaging between 2.0% and 2.2%, with 2024 production anticipated to reach 13.3 billion liters. For 2025, AMLAC expects a similar growth trajectory, between 2.1% and 2.2%, alongside a positive outlook for per capita milk consumption.
While Mexico relies heavily on the U.S. for its dairy imports due to geographic proximity, Hernández Álvarez ruled out an increase in U.S. milk exports to Mexico next year, citing stable exchange rates and increased global milk availability as mitigating factors. For domestic producers, a higher exchange rate is seen as beneficial, boosting milk prices in the market.
