French dairy conglomerate Lactalis has announced the shutdown of its Miercurea Ciuc factory in Romania, aiming to consolidate its operations across three other facilities in Campulung Moldovenesc, Oiejdea, and Sfantu Gheorghe. This strategic move is part of Lactalis's broader effort to streamline its production processes within the country.
Despite the closure, Lactalis assures that there will be no impact on the product lineup of its Romanian brands. Production from the Miercurea Ciuc site will be transferred to the remaining factories, ensuring continuity in supply and availability, as reported by Economica.net.
The company has also committed to supporting the 95 employees affected by the closure, promising substantial assistance during their transition. This closure marks the sixth Lactalis facility to be shut down in Romania, a step reflecting the company's ongoing efforts to strengthen its market leadership in the dairy sector.
The Miercurea Ciuc facility, along with the Sfantu Gheorghe factory, was originally acquired from the SigmaBleyzer investment fund in 2016. The other two active facilities in the Lactalis portfolio were bought from local entrepreneur Radu Ciurtin.
Lactalis Romania currently employs around 2,000 individuals and manages a robust portfolio that includes eight well-established Romanian brands such as Zuzu, Albalact, and LaDorna, alongside globally recognized labels like President and Galbani. The group is the largest collector of local milk, procuring over 244 million liters annually, and reports a turnover exceeding EUR 300 million from its dairy products and natural juices, according to Ziarul Financiar.
