Kenya's Livestock Sector Faces High Feed Prices
Kenya has extended the regulations that allow the country and other East African nations to continue duty-free imports of raw materials for feed production fr om the region. This government action aims to address the high feed prices and stabilize the industry, which is valued at around $230 million.

Cabinet Secretary Professor Njuguna Ndung'u stated in June that the Kenyan government would extend the permission for importing raw materials for feed production under the East African Community (EAC) Customs Management (Duty Remission) Regulations.

Moreover, the Association of Kenya Feed Manufacturers (Akefema) recently announced that to effectively curb the rapid increase in animal feed prices, driven by a prolonged shortage of raw ingredients, the government should allow duty-free imports of high-quality genetically modified (GM) and non-GM raw materials, including yellow maize and soybean meal.

In recent years, Kenya has relied on other African markets, such as Uganda, Zambia, Malawi, and Tanzania, for sourcing raw materials for animal feed production due to the low tariffs in these countries.

Over the past two years, animal feed prices have risen by approximately 60%, leading many farmers to lose their livelihoods in regions wh ere commercial livestock farming is prominent.

The surge in feed prices is attributed to Kenya being a net importer of almost all the raw materials used in the country for animal feed production.
