Indonesia's Ministry of Agriculture is implementing measures to boost national milk production, including promoting the development of dairy goat farming businesses. Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman stated on Saturday that dairy goat farming is a suitable and widely accepted alternative for milk production enhancement.

"The dairy goat farming business is favored by breeders due to its relative ease and quick production cycle," Sulaiman said during a visit to Bumi Nararya Farm (BNF) in Sleman, one of Indonesia's largest dairy goat farms. Located at the foot of Mount Merapi, BNF houses 706 goats, including 628 females and 78 males.

"This model should be replicated in other areas as part of our efforts to reduce milk imports and achieve self-sufficiency," he added.

According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the country's goat population stands at 18.5 million, with 3.3 million dairy goats. Central Java and East Java hold the largest goat populations, comprising approximately 20% of the total.

Current field observations indicate high demand for goat milk, particularly among urban residents, due to its numerous health benefits, including diabetes prevention and treatment. Goats and sheep also play a significant role in Indonesian cuisine, contributing to dishes such as goat satay and soto kambing (goat meat soup).

"We appreciate the dedication and hard work in enhancing farm productivity and product quality. This effort not only supports economic sustainability but also contributes to national food security," the minister remarked.
