The National Bureau of Economic Research of China's Dairy Industry reported industry results in April 2024. In the first quarter of 2024, China imported a total of 652,000 tons of various dairy products, a 15.6% decrease in physical volume, according to Dairynews.today.

Imports of dry dairy products in large packages totaled 223,400 tons, down 9.3% year-on-year, with the monetary value of powder imports amounting to 736 million yuan, a 24.7% decrease year-on-year.

Imported supplies of infant formulas amounted to 41,100 tons, down 48.5% year-on-year, with the monetary value of imports totaling 811 million yuan, down 42.5% year-on-year.

Imports of whey in the first quarter of the year amounted to 134,800 tons, down 0.7% year-on-year, with the monetary value of deliveries decreasing by 37.9%.

Imports of packaged milk totaled 96,800 tons, down 18.3% year-on-year, with the import value reaching 95 million yuan, 23.8% less than the same period last year.

China's dairy product exports increased by 21% to 14,500 tons, with the majority of shipments going to Hong Kong.

In the first quarter of this year, China also imported 360,000 tons of hay, which represents a 2.9% increase in physical volume but a 32.7% decrease in monetary value. Of this, 306,700 tons were alfalfa.

According to the statistics of the Customs Service of China, in the first quarter of 2024, China imported a total of 41,200 tons of cheese. This is a 2.2% decrease in physical volume and a 9.5% decrease in monetary value, with 25,600 tons of cheese sourced from New Zealand.
