Kazakhstan's dairy producers have encountered difficulties exporting dried mare's milk to China due to the absence of a corresponding Chinese standard, according to the press service of the Ministry of Trade of Kazakhstan.

"Considering the legislation of the People's Republic of China, all products imported into the Chinese market must meet local standards. Therefore, to successfully enter the Chinese market, it was necessary to develop and approve a national standard for dried mare's milk. After numerous appeals and efforts from the Ministry of Trade and Investment of the Republic of Kazakhstan and KazStandard, work on the standard began in 2019 at the National Health Commission of China," the agency explained.
Given that the average development time for national standards in China is two years, the approval of the standard for dried mare's milk is considered a significant achievement. The standard was approved and will come into effect in 2025.
"During this period, we established close cooperation with China, organizing meetings in both online and offline formats. We translated and provided the national standard for dried mare's milk and a series of GOST standards and technical regulations on food safety into Chinese to support the development of the corresponding Chinese standard. Mare's milk has a unique biochemical composition and is subject to strict requirements regarding the level of microorganisms and physicochemical parameters. For example, acidity should not exceed 6.5 Turner degrees, and moisture content should not exceed 5%. All these requirements were detailed in the national standard," noted Erkezhan Amirhanova, Director General of KazStandard.
The presence of this standard opens new prospects for Kazakhstani producers, allowing them to resume negotiations on importing Kazakhstani products into China and expand their export opportunities.
Despite its relatively small share in the global dairy market, Kazakhstan finds a unique niche in the production of dried mare's milk. Companies such as EurasiaInvest Ltd., S-Agro-Borovsko, and other producers actively promote this unique dietary product both domestically and in foreign markets.
