Their Astronaut milking robots, now in the fifth generation, have been shown to improve milk production by about 10% due to cows being milked more frequently than in traditional farms. The robots also reduce labor costs and allow for a more sustainable dairy farming model.
Despite the high initial investment—milking robots can cost several hundred thousand dollars—Lely argues that the long-term benefits, such as increased milk output and lower labor costs, outweigh these costs. In the U.S., about 10% of dairy farms have adopted some form of robotic assistance, a trend that is growing as larger farms grapple with labor shortages.
While some skepticism remains about whether robots directly increase milk production, their impact on cow welfare is clear. Cows now live in a less stressful environment as they have more autonomy and are treated as individuals, enhancing their overall wellbeing.
