GNT has reached the halfway point in its goal to reduce carbon intensity at its EXBERRY® color production facilities by 50% by 2030.
GNT Makes Strides in CO2 Reduction Goals, Latest Sustainability Report Shows
The company achieved a 26% reduction in carbon emissions at its production sites in the Netherlands, Germany, and the United States between 2020 and 2024, based on the volume of product sold. This is particularly noteworthy considering the company's significant growth during the same period, with global sales of plant-based EXBERRY® colors increasing by more than 50% since 2020. Through efficiency improvements and investments in sustainable technologies, GNT has managed to control overall emissions despite increased production demands.

GNT’s new sustainability report highlights significant progress across many of its 17 sustainability targets for 2030. Water efficiency at its factories has improved by 30% compared to 2020, surpassing the initial 20% target. Furthermore, GNT is committed to ensuring all contract farmers supplying fruits, vegetables, and plants for EXBERRY® colors participate in sustainable agriculture training programs. By the end of 2024, 80% of these farmers had achieved FSA (Farm Sustainability Assessment) Silver or Gold level certification.

Beyond environmental goals, GNT's targets also encompass measures to benefit individuals across the EXBERRY® value chain. In 2024, the lost-time accident rate at GNT factories fell 25% below the industry average. The company also supported social livelihood projects in its sourcing regions, including organizing a three-day leadership training program in Peru.

Hendrik Hoeck, CEO of GNT Group, commented: “We are proud to be delivering on our ambitious plans to protect people and the planet while achieving significant global growth. Our 2024 report underscores our commitment to leading the food coloring industry in sustainability and ensuring GNT's success for generations to come.”

Last year, GNT received an EcoVadis gold medal for its environmental and ethical performance, placing it among the top 3% in the food manufacturing industry. Looking ahead to 2025, GNT plans to focus on reducing indirect emissions across its broader value chain, building on the progress made at its production sites. Rutger de Kort, Sustainability Manager at GNT Group, emphasized the importance of collaborating with suppliers to achieve these reductions.

GNT maintains transparency by obtaining independent verification for its emissions data and providing customers with Product Environmental Footprint information across scopes 1, 2, and 3 for EXBERRY® colors. Rutger de Kort added: “Trust is paramount to us. That's why we publish independently audited Greenhouse Gas Verification Statements and equip our customers with the data they need to make informed decisions about optimizing their recipes.”
