During an informal update session with Dutch trade journalists, Sybren Attema, Chairman of the Board of Zuivelcoöperatie FrieslandCampina U.A., and Jan Derck van Karnebeek, CEO of Royal FrieslandCampina N.V., provided key insights into the cooperative's future plans. Topics ranged from the progress of their strategic program, "Expedition 2030," to the outlook for 2024, upcoming investments, and the extension of Attema’s chairmanship.
Extension of Chairmanship
Sybren Attema’s current term as Chairman is scheduled to end in November 2025. However, the Board has requested an extension of his chairmanship for an additional two years. This extension will require a temporary amendment to FrieslandCampina’s articles of association, which will be voted on by the Members’ Council in December 2024.
"I am grateful for the trust placed in me and have expressed my willingness to continue in my role. Ensuring that FrieslandCampina remains a leading and future-proof dairy player is essential for the livelihood of our farmers," Attema stated.
Expedition 2030 and Financial Outlook
CEO Jan Derck van Karnebeek discussed the cooperative’s strategic program, Expedition 2030, which aims to streamline FrieslandCampina into seven business groups, each focused on distinct product-market combinations. This restructuring has enhanced operational efficiency and improved the valorisation of members’ milk.
FrieslandCampina experienced a strong financial performance in the first half of 2024, including a recovery in profit margins and stronger market positions despite inflationary pressures and economic uncertainties. Van Karnebeek noted that this positive trend continued into the third quarter, and the company anticipates delivering favorable full-year results. As a result, FrieslandCampina expects to issue a supplementary cash payment to its member dairy farmers for the year 2024.
Sustainable Investments in Whey Production
In line with its commitment to growth and sustainability, FrieslandCampina announced a €30 million investment to expand its whey processing capabilities in Workum, Netherlands. This investment will enable the production of high-quality protein products for sports nutrition, medical nutrition, and infant formula.
The project also includes the replacement of a gas-fired evaporator with sustainable filtration systems, a move expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 6.8 kilotons and save 350,000 cubic meters of drinking water annually. The entire project is slated for completion by 2026.
With these strategic initiatives, FrieslandCampina continues to position itself as a forward-thinking leader in the global dairy industry, focused on innovation, sustainability, and profitability for its members.
