The initial election results show that National and ACT are likely to form the next government in New Zealand, and this has been welcomed by Federated Farmers.
The rural sector turned out in force to bring about this change, and farmers are hoping for a significant shift in government policy. While farmers don't necessarily disagree with the direction set by the previous government, including pricing agricultural emissions, it's the pace of change that concerns them. National's plan to delay charging farmers for on-farm emissions until 2030 has found favor with the sector, providing time to get their numbers in order and advance mitigating technologies. The rural sector is looking forward to working with National and has presented a list of 12 key priorities to build farmer confidence. This includes getting rid of the ute tax and allowing young farmers to use KiwiSaver to purchase their first farm. A cohort of farmers has also been elected to represent rural New Zealand in the new government, ensuring the voice of the agricultural sector is well-represented.
