The European Union has awarded protected designation of origin (PDO) to "Ezine Peyniri," a cheese variety from Turkey.
This marks the first PDO granted to a Turkish product by the EU. "Ezine Peyniri" is a creamy white cheese made fr om a blend of sheep's, goat's, and cow's milk, along with sea salt. The cheese, matured for at least eight months in brine, has a characteristic sour and mild-sweet taste.
The geographical indication status recognizes the specific region in Turkey, including Ezine, Bayramiç, Ayvacık districts, and some villages of Çan district, wh ere the cheese is produced.
“Turkey has a long-standing culinary tradition," said Ambassador Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut, head of the EU delegation to Turkey. "I welcome the fact that the EU journey of Turkish products continues so successfully. The consumers will know that they are getting the genuine “Ezine Peyniri” cheese. This registration will also bring wider recognition to the hard-working producers of this excellent cheese in Turkey and the EU.”
