This trend emerged in the data from Q4 2023 through February 2024, with notable increases in dairy imports by the Middle East and Southeast Asia, regions that rebounded strongly from previous low import levels.

While the EU27 and UK saw milk equivalent exports rise by 1.6% in February 2024 compared to the previous year, China's imports declined sharply by 31%. This downturn is attributed to China's increased domestic milk production, which saw a rise of 4.6% in 2023 from the previous year, totaling 41 million tonnes. This represents a substantial 28% increase since 2019.

Despite these figures, experts like Nate Donnay, the Director of Dairy Market Insights at StoneX, express caution regarding the accuracy of China’s reported production data. Concerns are that these figures might not fully account for the total milk produced, suggesting possible discrepancies in reported growth.

Moreover, the Chinese government has been actively promoting the increase of domestic dairy production to lessen the dependency on imported dairy products. This shift towards self-sufficiency is further influenced by new environmental regulations in major exporting countries such as the European Union and New Zealand. These regions are expected to face limitations on milk production and exports due to stricter environmental policies, signaling a potential end to the era of abundant dairy supplies.

This complex interplay of factors suggests a strategic pivot in China’s dairy consumption and import patterns, reflecting broader trends in global agricultural trade and policy shifts.
