Clover Sonoma and Starbucks Amplify Global Methane Reduction Efforts by Joining Dairy Methane Action Alliance

Clover Sonoma, a regional dairy leader, has partnered with the Dairy Methane Action Alliance, spearheaded by the Environmental Defense Fund, to combat methane emissions from the dairy industry.

This collaboration aligns Clover Sonoma with major industry players like Starbucks, who also recently joined, and founding members including the Bel Group, Danone, General Mills, Kraft Heinz, Lactalis USA, and Nestlé.

As part of their commitment, alliance members have pledged to annually report methane emissions fr om their dairy supply chains by the end of 2024 and to develop and share a comprehensive methane action plan. Starbucks will tailor its action plan to address methane emissions in specific regions wh ere it directly sources milk.

Michael Benedetti, senior director of sustainability, regulatory, and quality at Clover Sonoma, emphasized the brand's longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship and regenerative farming practices. He expressed enthusiasm about joining the alliance, highlighting the opportunity to both contribute to and learn from shared industry efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Katie Anderson, senior director of Business Food & Forests at the Environmental Defense Fund, welcomed the new additions to the alliance. She noted the critical role of the dairy sector, which accounts for nearly 10% of global human-caused methane emissions, in achieving climate targets. Anderson underscored the importance of collective action within the dairy supply chain to mitigate climate change impacts swiftly and effectively.
