Retail giant Carrefour and food industry leader Danone have reactivated a rail delivery service in France, marking a first by connecting a manufacturer’s production site directly to a supermarket warehouse.
Carrefour and Danone Reactivate Rail Link for Sustainable Bottled Water Shipments
The logistics hub at Grans, near Marseille, typically supplies over 130 Carrefour stores in the region via truck. However, it is now served by trains traveling 600 kilometers from Danone’s natural mineral water bottling plant in Evian, carrying shipments of the beverage. French rail firm Regiorail provides traction, while 4PL specialist IDEO, a subsidiary of Carrefour’s logistics provider ID Logistics, plays a key role in the operation.

Quentin Bonnerot, Customer Operations Director at Danone France, stated, “Alongside our partners such as Carrefour, we are delighted to be helping to relaunch a sustainable method of transporting goods, thereby continuing to reduce our environmental impact. This new joint project with Carrefour further illustrates our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint throughout the value chain.”

The delivery to Carrefour-ID Logistics’ hub in Miramas by train, using single wagons, aligns with their Corporate and Social Responsibility (CSR) approach. William Parramorre, Managing Director of IDEO, noted, “Today, our ambition is to develop multi-client rail services. The pooling of resources and costs to the benefit of all will ensure that transport flows are decarbonised.”

The development of the rail link translates to 500 fewer lorries on the roads annually, resulting in a reduction of 400 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
