Residents of nine EU countries (Belgium, Germany, Spain, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania, France, Sweden) and the UK, due to rising inflation, began to buy cheaper food products or opt for discounted food. This is evidenced by the results of a survey conducted by the Harris Interactive sociological service, commissioned by the French financial company Cetelem, which is part of the BNP Paribas banking group.

Thus, 81% of Europeans admitted that they began to more often buy products either at a lower price or at a discount. Among the French this figure is 79%.

High inflation has forced 83% of Europeans to also reduce food waste. At the same time, 35% of respondents (44% in France) said that they “began to eat less than before.”

58% of respondents in Europe gave up spending on holidays, while more than half (54%) of study participants limited spending on clothes and shoes.

“The situation remains difficult for European consumers, although they have demonstrated the ability to adapt to this environment in 2023,” Flavien Neuvy, an economist at BNP Paribas, said in the report.

The survey was conducted in November 2023 in 10 European countries. 10,389 people aged 18 to 75 took part in it.
