Arla Foods Ingredients forges partnership with ENORM to revolutionize food waste reduction

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Arla Foods Ingredients has joined forces with ENORM, Northern Europe's largest insect farm, to significantly diminish food waste.

The focus of this partnership is on delactosed permeate (DLP), a byproduct of lactose production that is currently underutilized and predominantly used for biogas production, a less optimal solution as per the EU’s Waste Framework Directive.
Traditionally challenging to incorporate into animal feed due to its composition, DLP is now finding a purpose through the larvae of the black soldier fly. ENORM, already utilizing these larvae for animal feed, recognizes their potential as a sustainable and nutritious protein source for human consumption.
Arla Foods Ingredients, committed to addressing food waste challenges, has been working on transforming DLP into nutritious feed for black soldier fly larvae. The company has been supplying ENORM with DLP for trial production, leading to the opening of a major facility in Flemming, Denmark, today (December 6, 2023). The facility is poised for full-scale production, and Arla Foods Ingredients is set to increase its DLP supply to ENORM substantially, reaching 15 truckloads a week from early 2024.
With the new facility capable of producing 100 tonnes of larvae daily, translating to over 10,000 tonnes of insect meal, the partnership is anticipated to bring about a significant shift in waste management. The DLP, instead of being directed towards biogas, will be repurposed for animal feed, contributing to a 16% reduction in food waste at Arla Foods Ingredients' Danmark Protein facility.
Sønke Møller, Senior Sales Developer at Arla Foods Ingredients, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, emphasizing the commitment to circularity within Arla Foods Ingredients' business model. Møller sees this partnership as an exemplary instance of companies working together to transform what was once considered food waste into a valuable nutritional resource, contributing to the realization of sustainable food systems.
