Argentina Halts German Imports to Curb Foot-and-Mouth Disease

Argentina has taken decisive action by suspending imports from Germany following an alert from the German Ministry of Agriculture regarding Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD). This move aims to prevent the spread and consequences of the disease, particularly in the animal production sector.

The National Service of Agri-Food Health and Quality (Senasa) is implementing necessary measures to curb the potential spread of FMD. The suspension affects various products, including bovine semen and certain animal products from ruminants and other species, until Germany regains its "disease-free" status.

Also known as "foot-and-mouth disease," FMD can lead to significant declines in livestock production, especially affecting beef, sheep, goat, and pig farms. Mortality rates can reach 100% in intensive farming systems without intervention.

Currently, protective measures in Germany include setting up protection and surveillance zones and restricting animal movement from affected areas. Meanwhile, Argentina has a longstanding commitment to keeping FMD at bay, evidenced by its continuous status as a "disease-free nation with vaccination," certified by global health organizations.
