Tirlán, a leading dairy cooperative based in Kilkenny, has confirmed plans to eliminate 150 positions as part of a new cost-reduction initiative. This move has sparked concerns among farm organizations about potential widespread restructuring within the Irish dairy industry.
Tirlán Announces 150 Job Cuts Amid Dairy Sector Challenges
Denis Drennan, President of the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association (ICMSA), expressed apprehensions that this could mark the beginning of significant changes within the sector, attributing the potential downturn to restrictive government policies. "This might only be the start of extensive restructuring efforts in an industry that has traditionally been the cornerstone of rural prosperity across Ireland," Drennan warned. He criticized the government's approach, suggesting that it was feasible to achieve environmental goals without undermining the dairy industry's contributions to rural economies.

Francie Gorman, President of the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA), echoed these sentiments, linking Tirlán's decision directly to EU and government policies that aim to reduce production through tighter regulations and reduced agricultural supports. "The dairy sector plays a vital role in sustaining the economic and social fabric of rural Ireland, yet it faces increasing pressures from policies that constrict productive capacities," Gorman noted.

Gorman also highlighted the impact of the announcement on employee morale at Tirlán and within the broader farming community, emphasizing the need for policy stability to allow farmers to plan effectively. "This announcement should serve as a critical signal to the government to prioritize the economic stability of the dairy sector," he stated.

Both leaders are calling for a reevaluation of policy frameworks to ensure they support the viability of the dairy industry while balancing environmental objectives.
