In a strategic move to streamline the nation's dairy industry, Sri Lanka's Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries has earmarked January 2024 as the month of Livestock Development. The key initiative involves the comprehensive registration of all dairy farms across the country under the Ministry's purview.
Sri Lanka's push for dairy farm registration: january 2024 designated as livestock development month
Addressing dairy farmers in the Kurunegala district, A.M. Jayasekara, the Assistant Director of Agriculture for Kurunegala District, highlighted that out of the approximately 290,592 animal farms in Sri Lanka, only 58,137 dairy farms have been officially registered. The majority of registered farms boast a daily milk production of nearly 100 litres. Unfortunately, unregistered dairy farm owners miss out on valuable subsidies and incentives provided by the Government, leading to an inaccurate representation of the country's livestock data.

To rectify this discrepancy, Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has directed the Livestock Development Unit of the Agricultural Ministry to spearhead the registration of all dairy farms nationwide. Starting January, registration with the ministry will become a mandatory requirement for dairy farmers, ensuring a more accurate and comprehensive database of the country's livestock holdings.
